Drake got out of the truck and walked Elle inside her apartment building. He waited beside her at the elevator, and they got in together. He pressed the fourth floor, and the doors shut.

They were silent on the way up. Elle kept her eyes on the floor and not on his bare chest. The doors opened, and someone was banging on her door. Brown waves swayed over his white leather jacket as he pounded his fist.

Drake stiffened next to her. “Is that—”

“Don’t hit him,” Elle said under her breath and casually approached Kannon. “What the hell are you doing?”

Kannon gripped a manila envelope in his hand and paused his banging. He took one look at Drake. Still shirtless. And then at Elle, wearing his shirt. He laughed and pointed at Drake but kept his stare on Elle.

“Really, Elle? Seth was right about you. Just another race whore taking any cock she—”

Elle punched him in the nose.

Blood came gushing out. He smacked the ground with his hands as he tried to steady himself. The envelope dropped. Drake leaned down and spoke in his ear. Kannon glared at him. Elle couldn’t hear, but she could imagine. He picked up the envelope and ushered Elle inside. He locked the door as Kannon yelled from the hallway.

“You broke my nose! Crazy bitch!”

They heard his moans and groans until the elevator doors shut at the end of the hall.

Elle put her hand on her head and closed her eyes. “I hit him. No hesitation,” she said. “I punched someone!”

“Elle, he was being a dick.” Drake bit the inside of his cheek. His fist clenched at his side. Knuckles white. She took the envelope from him and ripped it open. The cover for the magazine Halo would print tomorrow. Photos of their team. How great their team captain is. How great they are. Great. Great. No mention of Drake or Elle at all. She smiled up at him.

“This might work. As long as I get these to the magazine tonight,” she said and held up her camera. Drake took the folder and looked for himself.

Elle went to her dresser and pulled out a shirt and jeans. Drake sat down on her side of the bed. She could see his shirt peeking from under her pillow. Don’t spot it. Don’t.

Elle came out of the bathroom. Drake flopped back on her bed. His jeans pulled his boxers down to show more of his torso. She sat down on the opposite side of the bed and leaned back to put her head beside his. He locked eyes with her.

“What about elevators?” she asked, and he smiled at her.

“Usually, I’m fine, unless they’re full.”

“Cars are worse?”

“Yeah,” he said. His eyes danced around the room. The photos around her bed. Her stacks and stacks of books on her shelves and floor. Her desk was full of photos she wanted to frame but hadn’t gotten around to. “It smells like a printing press here. So much paper around, it would be easy to start a fire.
